Shopsmith Jointer Posts

This blog is getting so busy and unwieldy, so I decided to create a couple posts where I will link to articles about specific tools of interest. These will be linked to by tabs at the top of the home page. Let me know what you think of this and if there's anything I should add or change. Scott

The following links are to post related to the Shopsmith Jointer both here on Blogger and on www.MrToolHunter.com.

Tips for buying a Shopsmith Jointer

12 comments:

  1. I recently purchased at auction a combination jointer planer that I am trying to identify, it has a sticker on it refering to Mark V, but this is not part of any Shopsmith I've ever seen.It is cast Iron, about 300 lbs, and powered by a Balder 2HP motor. I am not able to find a model # or serial # on it.I would be happy to send photos if I have an email to send to. This machine appears to be circa 1950s. Would appreciate any help I can get. dfloyd@neo.rr.com Thanks.

  2. Is it worth getting the parts to fix an aluminum Magna Featherboard? It has the Knob and Hex Rod, but It's missing everything that causes it to spring back. I now have a Spring, but no manual to figure out what's next. The Exploded Diagram online is for the new Featherboard. Any one know of an online exploded diagram for the old Magna?

    1. I wouldn't restore it with an aluminum guard. The Featherguard is excellent and can be easily installed on any versions of the Shopsmith Jointer. (with the exception of the one that bolts to the 10er main table) The diagram of the current jointer on Shopsmiht.com has very few things different from your unit.

    2. Thanks Scott, the Brother of the RLF owes me about $80, maybe I'll ask for the new Featherboard instead.

  3. I purchased my Mark V in 1982. I noticed the dust chute in one of your recent videos. I purchased that package and find parts in it other than the dust chute. There is no explanation of why these parts are there and why they were added. Can you clarify, either here or in a future video?

    1. The dust chute on the jointer or on the Mark V? If you are talking about parts of the lower sawguard I bet I know the parts you mean. Are they small, flat pieces of black or grey plastic? Scott

  4. No, the dust chute on the jointer. Mine is old enough that it does not have the ledge on the end of the outfeed table. The kit includes the plastic chute and supposedly 1/4 x 20 screws (not long enough) and torque nuts (missing entirely). It then includes a rear cutter guard which I think I now understand and can't imagine ever needing. And a Shaft Guard which seems rather pointless, at least when used on the Mark V. Finally there seems to be a less removable attachment for the Cutter Guard. No explanation as to what the advantage is. So I paid $50+shipping for the only part I see a need for, the dust chute. Any thoughts?

  5. I recently came upon a Shopsmith jointer of the mid 80's vintage. It appears to me like someone tried to pick it up using the fence. I'd like to email you a picture so you might be able to steer me in the right direction as to repair. The fence doesn't touch the table. Thanks

    1. That’s caused by a bent quadrant assembly, which is the aluminum part of the fence that slides along the steel fence rail. Search on the Shopsmith website for part number 502651. Scott

    2. OK, that's what I was thinking. Thanks Scott. I'll buy one today. I just wanted to check before I made the purchase. Appreciate the assistance.
